Abstract

Kertas ini bertujuan untuk membincangkan pencapaian masyarakat Melayu Sarawak clalam aspek pencliclikan sejak sebelum mercleka sehingga negeri ini menyertai Malaysia pada 1963 clan tahun-tahun selepasnya. Negeri Sarawak mempunyai susur galur pemerintahan yang bersilih ganri bermula clengan pemerintahan Kesultanan Brunei sekitar abacl ke-15 sehinggalah keclatangan Brooke pacla 1939, yang memerintah Sarawak 2 tahun kemuclian. Pacla bulan Disember 1941, tentera Jepun telah menawan negeri ini clan akhirnya menyerah kalah pacla 11 September 1945 yang menyebabkan pentaclbiran negeri ini cliambil alih oleh Penraclbiran Tentera British selama 7 bulan. Sebelum Sarawak menyertai Malaysia pacla 16 September 1963, kerajaan Kolonia! British telah memerintah negeri ini sejak Julai 1946. Dengan susur galur pemerintahan yang begitu rencam clitambah clengan penclucluknya yang pelbagai etnik memungkinkan wujuclnya persaingan clalam berbagai biclang termasuklah pencliclikan. Sehubungan clengan itu, kertas ini cuba untuk memberi fokus kepacla pencapaian pencliclikan masyarakat Melayu Sarawak cerucamanya selepas kemasukan negeri ini clalam Malaysia clengan membanclingkan secara sepintas lalu situasinya sewaktu cliperintah oleh penjajah. Perkara-perkara yang akan dimasukkan dalam perbincangan ini termasuklah perkembangan sekolah-sekolah Melayu sebelum clan selepas Merdeka, penyertaan clan pencapaian mereka dalam bidang pendidikan serta beberapa isu lain yang berkaitan dengan tajuk ini. 


This paper aims to discuss the educational achievements of the Malay Community in Sarawak since pre-independence day; until Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963, as well as progress in the years that follow. The political history of Sarawak has often seen rulership over the state change hands, beginning with the Brunei Sultanate in the 15th century until the arrival of the Brooke Dinasty in 1941, as well as the invasion of the Japanese Armed Forces in December 1941 and their surrender in September 11, 1945 that preceded the state's administration under the British Military for 7 months. Before joining Malaysia in September 16, 1963, Sarawak was since ruled by the British Colonial Government since July, 1946. This historical background, when combined with the multitudes of different ethnic tribes and races, had create a culture of competition among the peoples of Sarawak to be the best in every field, especially in the field of education. This paper shall therefore attempt to focus on and explore the educational achievements of the Malay Community in Sarawak by comparing progress in this field during this colonial days with their current achievements in more modern times. The paper will also discuss the development, contributions and achievements of Malay schools before and after independence, as well as few other issues related to this topic.
