Abstract

The work of a museum curator can be categorized as an authoritative source to understand the intellectual tendencies of society. This study will utilize library analysis methods on several historical artifacts at the Abu Bakar Museum in Pekan, Pahang, and the Terengganu State Museum. The main focus of this study is to examine the ratio of thought and practicality of wasatiyyah (moderation) practiced by Malay society. The findings of this study have identified several main points. Firstly, the museum indeed serves as a recorder of the worldviews and thoughts of society and is not value-neutral. However, museum curators are undoubtedly influenced by society’s thoughts when organizing galleries. Secondly, various factors explain why museums can be utilized for effective educational purposes. These include uniqueness, ease of remembrance, and the ability to generate critical thinking. Thirdly, the philosophy of wasatiyyah, in simple terms, has been implemented in Malay society by balancing worldly and spiritual interests, rejecting all forms of extremism, and striking a balance between divine revelation, reason, and local realities.
